Album Review, Lumero

Our writer Carmyn recently took the time to sit down and check out Portland native Lerumo's recent EP Twentyone Rebel. Here's what they thought!

Opinions and critiques are that of Carmyn Manning.

Twentyone Rebel - Lerumo

Carmyn's Rating: 3/5

The EP opens with Lerumo’s first song “Replaceable” which has an upbeat, summer vibe despite it’s lyrical content in which he talks about replacing a significant other. The catchy chorus and electronic sounds remind me of early 2012 ‘Cobra Starship’. This track is an overall feel good summer song and the editing on his vocals is reminiscent of Jordan from ‘The Ready Set’ circa 2010.

The second track, “Trippin” has an island inspired background track with hip-hop beats, which is a common theme in the rest of the songs on this EP. Lerumo has smooth riffs and backing vocals on this track which make the song and creates a catchy chorus.

“Little Luv” is the third track, Lyrically, the chorus is repetitive which is also common among his songs which give his songs a party vibe. Towards the end of the song, the beat slows down and a deeper voice does a countdown, I thought this part was the interesting and wasn’t expecting it.

The forth track, “Overdrive” has a house beat with Lerumo’s vocals flowing over the track. Lerumo’s voice builds up with the beat of the song making this song a pump-up song for parties. This track sounds like it could have radio play over a summer season, with it’s upbeat message about falling in love and having fun.

The fifth track “Mister Poison” is my favorite and is the best musically composed track on the EP. Lerumo’s smooth vocals are reminiscent of hip-hop artist Troy Lanez. The song begins with a mysterious beat and as a listener it’s not clear where the song will go but then it slowly leads into a hip hop beat and Lerumo flows over the track effortlessly.

I’d like to see where Lerumo takes his sound and if he mixes with other genre’s in the future to create different moods. As for his lyrical content, I’m curious to see if Lerumo has deeper stories to tell and share with his listeners. Overall, this EP has carefree electronic, pop and hip-pop songs that are great for the summer with catchy lyrics.
