Meet the Artist: Didirri
Melbourne artist Didirri has been making a name for himself in the music industry over the last year and a half. Since his performance at BIGSOUND in 2017 and the release of his debut single "Blind You", he has been gaining popularity and showing people that he has something to say. With the release of his debut EP, Measurements, in July of this year, and his first tour in the United States starting this evening, we had the chance to ask him some questions about his music and influences.
How has the response been from the Measurements EP? Knee jerk as though hit with a hammer. Do you have a personal favorite song of yours? If so, why is it your favorite? Blind You, It appeals to some classic Irish melodies that will always have my heart. It seems like this new EP has come with a boost in your musical popularity. How do you keep yourself so down to earth with all of these new accomplishments? I try not to read any reviews. Bad reviews crush you, good reviews give you a big head. Better to continue in ignorance than to be altered by criticism. I can tell just from a glance that you work hard to be a genuine and honest artist and human. Do you ever find it hard to be so open and real with your fans? The only times that I find this to be difficult is when someone is not present. Usually intoxicated by alcohol, people’s inability to be self-aware usually gets in the way of a two way interaction. Other than that, most people will connect willingly with their motions if they’re coaxed into the right zone. Where do you pull most of your inspiration from when writing your songs? Inspiration implies artistry, so I would say I am inspired by most artists. But also like comedians I tend to people watch a lot. Are there any artists that have influenced your sound or writing process since you started? Other people would say that I have been influenced by artists for my sound. But mostly I just make whatever we make in the studio, service the song more than trying to make something specific. My writing process is definitely influenced by whatever I am currently listening to. I’m definitely a lyricist above musician. With this being your first tour throughout the US, what are you looking forward to most about playing shows in a new place? I enjoy the subtle differences between nationality and audience. But it is striking to me how similar most audiences are around the world. Mostly I am looking forward to seeing more of this beautiful country. If you could collaborate with any artist, alive or dead, who would you choose? Probably David Bowie, although some of his collabs are rather questionable. Where is one place you hope to be able to play/tour in the future? I’m looking forward to one-day touring South America, I also have a huge fondness for Southeast Asia. It would be amazing to play to audiences there.
