EP Review: Shatterproof

Revival Recordings’ newest signee, Shatterproof, is here to prove why you should pay attention to this quintet. Their self-titled EP was just released on July 21 and it’s full of carnival ride music mixed with heavy guitars. The lead single, “Karma” is your classic break up song but also how the boy thinks he deserved more than a girl who cheated. The song is catchy, would be very easy to dance around to especially the chorus. The EP is only 5 songs so the band leaves no room for filler songs. It opens with the a single, “So Punk” which has a bunch of stand out lyrics such as “I’m sick and tired of working for no pay, all work and no play, disgusting with no shame.” This lyric specifically stands out to me because as a college student you do internships for no pay and sometimes there doesn’t seem to be room for socialization because of such a hectic schedule. This is a high note to start the short EP off on because it sets the bar high vocally. The second track is “Cookie Cutter Life” which is about being stuck in a job and feeling like your life is just like everyone else’s and you’re not meant to be an individual. This song is one of my favorites because it really displays the carnival rock music they’re creating. It’s just so different from anything else and it’s very refreshing.

The last track on the record “Lykos” displays Branson Hoog’s vocals and the very carnival/ cartoony sound the reminds me of early Set It Off. As soon as you think you have the song figured out the guitars and drums come in changing the tone. The lyrics come at you fast as Branson feels like he’s directly talking to someone who is very much caught up in a life she doesn’t want. I highly recommend listening to this EP. "Lykos" is probably my favorite song of the 5 and I'm very excited to see what the band has up next.
