Interview, Civil Youth
Our writer Meaghan had the chance to chat with Mike of rising Philadelphia group Civil Youth. Check it out, and keep your eyes peeled for her review of their upcoming album!
Questions below written by Meaghan D’Amico and answered by vocalist Michael Kepko of Civil Youth.
1. How did the collaboration with Bradley Walden come together?
We decided to collaborate with Bradley after catching Emarosa's show in New Jersey on their last run. Their set and Bradley were just insane in the best way. Really matched the energy we like to put out on stage and their record "131" just slays, so we hit him up. Thankfully he liked the song enough and decided to get on the 2nd verse of "Let You In".
2. Favorite lyric you wrote for the record?
"Take a penny for my thoughts. Store it away and bank on every word that I'm saying. I will fight to the day we are socially stable and can pin these words on my sleeve; metaphorical staple."
3. Message you hope your fans or new fans take from the record?
You WILL overcome any mental obstacle. This record is literal proof that if I [Mike] can, so will you. You're not alone.
4. What most inspired you to write the kind of music you do? Or rather the style because there aren't many bands who do the alt rock/rap anymore.
We are just influenced by so many genres, we wanted to write the music we love listening to. This new record encompasses Alternative, Rap, Post-Hardcore, Pop, and even some Electronic elements. We don't want to be confine, but rather create something that's fresh and new.
5. How does this compare to the last two records in your mind?
This new record is a more defined and mature voice we've always set out to find. More than ever, this music is Civil Youth.
6. In the battle between Star Wars and Star Trek which side are you on and why?
Star Wars wins every time. Evan doesn't like Star Wars because he's wrong, but when you have light sabers and the "force" how does Star Trek compete? Star Trek is sick though, don't get us wrong. Patrick Stewart is my dad.
