EP Review
Review by: Emmeline Knowlan
Despite only recently relocating to Nashville, California-native singer-songwriter Risa Rodriguez’s debut EP gives the listener a sense of whimsy the country music capital is known for. Mad Love, released under the name Risa and the Loyal, is a five-track indie pop/rock EP riddled with hints of folky vibes.
The opening song reminds me of a Celtic-type anthem, and sets up the theme of love and heartbreak that encompasses the entire work. Rodriguez’s vocals are entrancing, and second track “Morningstar” sounds like the type of song you’d want to listen to while eating cotton candy on a sunny day. The following song, “Rusty Borgens,” has a jamming bass line that you can’t help but dance along to. “Change” is the only slower song on the EP, but has a powerful buildup in sound toward the end. The chorus, “So, I try to stay away from you, but you’re always on my mind,” really hit home for me lyrically.
The EP is rounded out by “Thomas Crown;” the track features guitar elements not found in the other songs, and slightly abandons the more delicate sounds of the first four. Although it took me a few listens to fully appreciate the messages in each song, the amount of emotion across the entire EP is captured well both musically and vocally. I’d recommend giving Mad Love a listen if you’re already a fan of female vocalists like Birdy or Ingrid Michaelson, or if you’re looking for a reason to branch out into that type of indie genre.
